Review of Synology DS508 5-bay NAS Server
This is not a performance or feature review, there are plenty of
those available if you ask Google. This is a note of my real world
experience buying, setting up and running a Synology DS508 5-bay NAS
Server for home use.
Having considered a storage solution for a while I finally settled on the Synology unit with 5x 1.5TB Seagate ST31500341AS Barracuda drives. Reviews of the unit suggest that the drive caddys are a little flimsy and inprecise when fitting but I had no issues when putting it together.
I was a little worried about whether I could get the unit running in a raid configuration having never worked with one before. Suffice to say if you read the manual you'll be up and running easily. Formatting 5 1.5tb drives in raid 5 takes time. A long time. I gave up checking the progress bar which took 3 hours to reach 40%. On completion Windows reports a usable size of 5.36TB.
Configuring the unit is easy with the accompanying Synology Assistant tool and the web control panel interface.
Transfer speed is one thing I thought may be an issue having read several reviews and comparissons of similar units which report that you can expect transfer rates of 45mb/sec when working with large files. For me, using a 1gb LAN connection directly to the DS508 from a laptop I see Windows reporting 20-30mb/sec when transferring large files from the hard drive and 6-9mb/sec when transferring from the DVD drive. Highest transfer rate I saw so far was 50mb/sec in Vista's copy dialogue box.
To put this in perspective we have a Buffalo Terrastation II at work which reviews state should achieve a transfer rate of around 20mb/sec. We have this on the network serving files for up to 6 people daily and have no performance issues. I guess this makes my choice of the DS508 for home use massive overkill but I did need a lot of space and any 5 bay NAS server is going to have a bit of grunt behind it.
Startup time for the NAS unit is around 30 seconds and holding the power button down for 8 seconds shuts it down quickly.
If you're considering a NAS Server for home or office I doubt you will be disappointed with a Synology DS508.
